Buenos Aires City
Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires was founded by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536 and founded again by Juan de Garay in 1580. In 1994 was declared autonomous city. Declared the Capital of the Republic in 1880, its population currently amounts to 3 million inhabitants. The population density is 14827 inhabitants per km2. It covers a total surface area of 200 km2. Its streets are driven through by 1 million vehicles. The Rio de la Plata (River Plate)- the widest of the world- bathes its coastline.
To the city's poet laureate, Jorge Luis Borges, Buenos Aires was as eternal as air and water. To many Argentines, their capital city is synonymous with the country itself - indeed, nearly 40% of the population lives in the city or its massive, sprawling suburbs. Buenos Aires is situated on the banks of the Río de la Plata.
A city transported from its European parents, its compact and regular centre is reminiscent of Paris, and its tree-lined avenues and frequent plazas have a beguiling, faded elegance.
